About the seminar

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) affect around one in ten pregnancies and are associated with a substantially increased lifetime risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The mechanisms linking the two remain incompletely defined, but the postnatal period represents a plausible and underexploited window for intervention. Emerging evidence suggests that tighter blood pressure control in the weeks after delivery may influence longer-term cardiovascular phenotype, yet the natural history of postnatal blood pressure recovery is poorly characterised beyond the first few weeks.

Our findings confirm a high prevalence of persistent cardiovascular morbidity following HDP, and indicate that early postnatal blood pressure may help identify those at greatest risk. Ongoing work is exploring the feasibility of wearable technology to characterise postnatal blood pressure in greater detail, providing a platform to test postnatal interventions and to determine whether blood pressure lowering in this window alters longer-term cardiovascular health.
