About the seminar

Declines in skeletal muscle strength, power and quality are closely linked to reduced mobility, loss of independence, an increased risk of falls, and poorer overall health outcomes. Unfortunately, there is currently no sensitive way of monitoring skeletal muscle properties, and this contributes to diagnostic delays of some diseases and impedes delivery of clinical trials.

This can be particularly problematic in rarer, rapidly progressing diseases such as motor neurone disease (MND), a fatal neurodegenerative disease that affects connectivity between the central nervous system and skeletal muscles, for which there are currently no effective treatments.
In this presentation, Professor Emma Hodson-Tole will outline some of her recent work exploring potential digital markers of skeletal muscle changes associated with neurodegeneration and healthy ageing, particularly focusing on the use of ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging as well as physical behaviour monitoring using wearable sensors.
