Summary

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly being used in healthcare research, but often without patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE). In this seminar, Mel will describe a co-design approach she used for developing educational animations about LLMs to support PPIE in AI research. She will share examples of how approaches to enhance AI literacy can generate meaningful PPIE insights into AI-focused health research, drawing on her own programme of work on equity of patient-facing AI tools.

Speaker’s bio

Dr Mel Ramasawmy is a qualitative health services researcher at the Queen Mary University of London, working at the intersection of digital health, equity, and patient experiences of access and care for long-term health conditions including cardiometabolic disease, Long Covid, cancer, and depression. She holds a PhD in Anthropology from Roehampton University, and has a background in health policy, covering medicine and medical device safety, and social care. Mel is currently supported by the NIHR Pre-Application Support Fund, to develop a programme of work on understanding inequity in patient-facing AI.
