Summary

Artificial intelligence is rapidly being integrated into healthcare systems, yet current innovation and governance approaches risk reinforcing existing inequities if issues of inclusion, context, and lived experience are not meaningfully addressed. This presentation draws on insights from Project BUILD, a bilateral India-Australia initiative that brought together policymakers, clinicians, industry leaders, and patient advocates to co-develop practical approaches to more inclusive healthcare AI. Through collaborative workshops and cross-sector dialogue, reciprocal international knowledge exchange trips, the project generated bilateral policy recommendations for embedding inclusivity in healthcare AI, with a focus on equity. Efforts are currently being made towards scaling this work into broader, multi-country collaborations and advancing harmonised, equity-centred policy frameworks for healthcare AI internationally.

Speaker’s bio

Dr Mahima Kalla is an interdisciplinary digital health researcher at the Centre for Digital Transformation of Health (University of Melbourne, Australia). She works at the juncture of health, technology, and social science, with a focus on ensuring that digital health and AI innovation translate into equitable outcomes for all. Her work focuses on translating patients’, carers’, and healthcare professionals’ lived experiences into the co-design, development, and implementation of digital health interventions. She has led and contributed to a range of nationally significant initiatives, including digital tools embedded within Australia’s health system and international policy work on inclusive healthcare AI. She also co-leads the International Collaborative for Translational Digital Health’s Digital Health Equity Hub, which is a trilateral partnership among the universities of Manchester, Melbourne, and Toronto.
