Summary

Digital and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are increasingly prevalent within healthcare and society at large. Some of these technologies have shown to significantly improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare services, while others may be detrimental to individual and population health. This makes digital and AI technologies important determinant of health.

In this seminar, Robin will explore the double-edged nature of digital and AI technologies in relation to health equity at individual and population level. He will then dive deeper into how these technologies risk division and inequities, as well as how these technologies may be used to close the equity gap.

Speaker’s bio

Robin van Kessel is the André Hoffmann Fellow on Health System Financing and Payment Models at LSE Health and the World Economic Forum. At the LSE, he co-founded and leads the research unit focusing on the regulation, implementation, and financing of digital health and AI technologies. He holds a PhD in Comparative Health Policy from Maastricht University. His research portfolio focuses on the intersection of digital health and artificial intelligence, health systems and policy, and health inequalities. His work is published in leading medical and health policy journals such as npj Digital Medicine, The Lancet Digital Health, The Lancet Regional Health – Europe, the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, and The BMJ.
